Abstract :
This study aims to explore the origin and evolution of nursing culture in ancient China and analyze its influence on modern professional nursing practice. Nursing practices have deep roots in ancient civilizations. The development of nursing culture in ancient China provides a foundation for understanding contemporary nursing. By examining this evolution, we can gain valuable insights into how ancient values, skills, and ethical standards shaped nursing as a profession. A documentary research approach was used to investigate the evolution of nursing culture across seven historical periods in China, from the Upper Ancient Period to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The study integrated the theory of cultural evolution to contextualize the development of nursing practices. Primary sources, such as ancient medical classics, literature, and historical writings, were analyzed to restore the dimensions of ancient nursing practices, including values, skills, and ethical codes. The research employed a linear method to trace cultural shifts in nursing across different periods. The study found that nursing in ancient China evolved from survival skills essential to individuals and groups into a knowledge-based practice. This development was influenced by social learning, technological innovation, shifts in values and beliefs, and interdisciplinary exchanges. Ancient Chinese nursing culture underwent continuous self-improvement, contributing to the formalization of nursing as a profession. Ancient Chinese nursing culture significantly influenced the evolution of nursing practice. By understanding these historical developments, contemporary nursing can benefit from cross-cultural communication and the intergenerational transfer of knowledge. This research provides valuable insights into how the wisdom of ancient nursing can guide modern nursing innovations and enhance professional practice today.
